New Hampshire is the 45th smallest state in America, but it’s big on fighting crime. In fact, those who call the Granite State home can brag that they live in one of the 10 safest states in the U.S.
According to recent FBI Crime Report data, New Hampshire reported 1.87 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. That’s about 50 percent less than the national average of 3.67 violent crimes per 1,000 citizens, giving New Hampshire the third-lowest violent crime rate in the nation. New Hampshire also has a low property crime rate. As a whole, the state reported approximately 15 percent less incidents of property crime than the typical U.S. state, and the average property crime rate of the state’s safest cities was one third of the national average.

The law enforcement agencies of all 30 cities listed below get our seal of approval, but we found one department that’s doing an especially good job of pairing community involvement with the power of the Internet to keep streets safe. The Merrimack Police Department’s user-friendly website encourages residents to keep current on crime happening in their community. Among other resources, the website offers a robust crime mapping tool that shows the location of all traffic stops, incidents, and reported crimes. Plus, the website also offers a daily log of community calls for service, information regarding the department’s Citizen’s Police Academy, and the department’s annual report.

How We Chose the Safest Cities in New Hampshire
To create our 30 safest cities in New Hampshire list, we carefully analyzed recent FBI Crime Report data of cities with a population of over 3,000 residents in 2012. Next, we took a close look at the number of Violent Crimes, consisting of robbery, murder, forcible rape and aggravated assault, as well as Property Crimes, which include burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson and larceny-theft. Then, we calculated how often these crimes were reported per 1,000 people to help level the playing field.
When it comes to accurate crime statistics, the FBI Crime Report is considered an excellent source. However, not all New Hampshire cities reported complete data to the FBI. When a city doesn’t have all their statistics reported, we remove them from eligibility. So, if you think there is a city missing from our list, we could’ve removed it from our list for that reason.
